First and foremost this is not for telling you how hot water it, it will beam right thought the water and tell you how hot the pan is. This will shoot right through glass and you will have no clue what it's actually taking the temperature of, same with a mirror except in that case it will bounce off. Think maybe something that has hot air in, around, or coming off of. You can't shoot the beam at it from thirty feet away and try to get an accurate read, basically the closer the better. With all that in mind, when used properly the device is more of less accurate, I think it may be good to keep in the car to check car seat temperature of in the garage to check engine temperature before working on something, or even grill temperature.
